It's definitely worth it, Alex. And you know that. But being able to share in your rage against the machine is a quite wonderful privilege. I've never thought of editing as a spectator sport before. Strangely, I enjoy editing. I think of it as cutting and polishing a diamond. I want it to be the best it can be. But I also think that, as a process, editing is even more lonely than writing and perhaps that's where your antipathy to it comes from.
To use your diamond analogy, John, I think I enjoy hunting and digging, rather than polishing. Imagine the raw rock and earth, then your pick hits a glimmer! A diamond in the rough, so to speak. How much more lovely it is than sitting on an heiress's finger.
I never feel lonely writing or editing. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy being alone.
